But before you start with a lesson, let me summarise some important facts about verb tenses…
There are 18 tenses in Spanish that cover all the possible verb forms in this language across the three moods: indicative, subjunctive and imperative.
The indicative mood is used for stating facts and objective reality, the subjunctive mood expresses wishes, doubts and hypothetical situations; and the imperative mood is used for commands and requests.
It’s worth noting that some of these tenses, particularly the future subjunctive and future perfect subjunctive, are very rarely used in modern Spanish and are mostly found in legal documents or very formal literature.
For most Spanish learners, mastering the present, past (preterite and imperfect) and future tenses in the indicative mood, along with the present subjunctive, will cover the vast majority of everyday communication needs.
So don’t get too overwhelmed when it comes to learning the verb tenses. Little by little!
